A European call or put option, you can only exercise on the expiration date. And the situation with a put option, a call option gave you the right to buy the stock at a specified price. A put option is the opposite. It gives you the right to sell the stock at a specified price. So this little made up put option I've constructed right here. And anything above $50, you wouldn't exercise the put option at all. But if you get above $50, you would want to exercise your call option. If the stock is worth $60 at expiration, then your call option is worth $10. Because you have the right to buy something for $50, which you can sell for $60. So then you have the value of your call option So it feels like, if you were just trading it, that the more volatile something is, the more valuable an option would be on that.
